Shantonio Hunter is a survivor of domestic violence from Nashville, Tennessee who was prosecuted by the Davidson County DA’s Office for the death of her three-year old son Elijah because she was unable to control the violence of her abuser. On September 22, 2017 she signed a plea deal for 28 years in prison. If the case had gone to trial, prosecutors planned to force her to re-witness what her abuser did to her child.
The Campaign to Free Shantonio is a group of individuals and community organizations organizing for her freedom and an end to the prosecution and incarceration of domestic and sexual violence victims in Nashville and nationwide. Survivors like Shantonio need healing, not punishment.
